Downingtown Heat AAU President
Mike is a 1992 graduate of Bucknell University (BS Accounting). He went to Princeton High School where he was All-State in Football and Track for two consecutive years; he was also an Academic All-American his senior year. Mike, along with Wayne Anderson started the Downingtown Heat in 2011 with one team. Mike is a CPA and CMA and runs his own consulting business. He has been married to his wife Karen (also a Bucknell Grad) for over 20 years and they have four kids.
Downingtown Heat AAU Club Manager
Gina, a former Division III women's basketball player (Blackburn College - Central Illinois) and Southern Illinois high school basketball standout (Pinckneyville Community High School), serves as the Club Manager for the Downingtown Heat. Gina, a USA Basketball Gold Licensed Coach, also acts as Head Coach to our National Downingtown Heat Elite 2024 team. For her day job, she works as a Director @ Avanade, an IT services and solutions company. Gina lives in the West Chester area with her two sons (Taliq and Kyan) who both play for the Heat and her best dog pal and #1 D-Heat fan, Mick.
Downingtown Heat AAU Treasurer & Fundraising Chair
Melissa is a wife, mom and teacher. She has been teaching for 18 years, 14 of which have been at Twin Valley Elementary Center in Chester County, PA. Melissa lives in Glenmoore with her husband (Sean), two kids (Cooper and Renna) and her two dogs (Sammy and Burt.) She became involved in the Downingtown Heat after her son's first season on the 4th grade boys team. Though she is learning more about basketball every day, she is excited to bring the Board what she does know; her ability to organize and her enthusiasm to help. Go Heat!
Downingtown Heat AAU Boys Commissioner
Jamil, a Downingtown West High School alum, played football and ran track throughout high school. He earned his criminal justice degree from Kutztown University. Currently, Jamil serves the community as a police officer for Whitpain Township police department. Jamil has been a part of the Downingtown Heat program for the last 8 years; 6 years as a Coach and has contributed to the Downingtown Heat Board of Directors for the last two years as Boys Commissioner. Over these past 8 years, he's enjoyed breaking down game film with his son who plays on the class of 2025 team and helping to recruit new talent to our program. Outside of the Heat, Jamil likes to spend time with his wife and children, travel outside of the country and stay active within the community he lives.
Downingtown Heat AAU Girls Commissioner
Tom has been a head girls’ basketball coach at the high school level since 1999 (Upper Merion Area High School: 16 years & Downingtown East High School: 5 years). With over 300 career wins, Schurtz has also led teams to Suburban One-League titles: 2002 & 2003 seasons and Ches-Mont League titles in 2019 & 2020. He was named coach of the year twice: Times Herald in 2003 and the Daily Local in 2015. In his time working with players at the high school level he has coached 9 basketball players who reached the 1000-point plateau, earned a District One play-off birth in 16 of 21 seasons (including each of the last 13 seasons) and has assisted 32 players to play intercollegiate basketball. In attention to coaching at the high school level, he has also coached AAU for 10 years (Fencor & Downingtown Heat). His Fencor team finished in the top 16 at AAU Nationals in 2006 & his Heat team finished third at AAU’s East Coast Nationals in 2019.
